The NDC Concerned Movement in Abia State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain its commitment to electoral justice following a Supreme Court ruling delivered in September 2026.
The group made its position known during a visit to the commission’s office in Umuahia, where it praised INEC for its role in the legal dispute surrounding the nomination of candidates for the Abia Central Senatorial District.
Coordinator of the movement in Abia Central, Chiadikaobi Alusigwe, said the commission’s involvement in the matter was important to protecting democratic principles and ensuring compliance with the Electoral Act.
He alleged that the process leading to the emergence of the NDC’s senatorial candidate had raised concerns among party members, particularly over the appearance of Senator Nkechi Nwogu’s name on the list submitted to INEC.
According to Alusigwe, Ogbonna Abaraukwu and Blessing Ugbo were among those associated with the party’s primary election, but members were surprised when Nwogu was subsequently listed as the candidate for the district.
He further alleged that Nwogu participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial primary on May 18, 2026, before taking part in the NDC primary conducted on May 29 of the same year. The group questioned the circumstances surrounding her emergence as the party’s candidate.
Also speaking, Abaraukwu maintained that political aspirants must comply with the legal requirements governing party membership and primary elections. He expressed hope that INEC would examine the group’s complaint and forward it to the commission’s national headquarters in Abuja for further consideration.
The movement called on the electoral body to ensure that the rules guiding candidate nominations are applied fairly, stressing that all qualified aspirants deserve equal opportunities. It also appreciated its supporters for standing behind its campaign for what it described as credible representation in Abia Central.
