Dr Monday Onyekachi Ubani, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), renowned human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, Lagos, has been appointed by Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, as a member of his Campaign Advisory Council ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The appointment brings into the council a legal practitioner with extensive experience in legal practice, professional leadership, public-interest advocacy and political engagement.
Dr Ubani previously served as Second National Vice President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Chairman of the NBA Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL). Throughout his career, he has been involved in advocacy relating to human rights, constitutional governance, judicial accountability and the administration of justice. His elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2024 further marked a significant milestone in his legal career.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ubani is a strong supporter of Governor Otti’s administration and has publicly defended the governor’s governance agenda. He supported Otti during the 2023 governorship election and has continued to express confidence in the administration, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare and public-sector reforms. His involvement in the governor’s political mobilisation reflects his continued participation in Abia State’s political affairs.
The appointment comes amid preparations for the 2027 governorship election, with the Labour Party positioning its campaign structures ahead of the polls. Dr Ubani’s experience in legal practice, professional leadership and public engagement is expected to contribute to the advisory council’s deliberations and campaign-related responsibilities.
His inclusion in the council further formalises his participation in the Labour Party’s preparations for the forthcoming election. As political activities continue to gather momentum across Abia State, the council is expected to contribute to the party’s strategic planning and coordination ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
