The Abia State Police Command is intensifying its internal monitoring and crime prevention strategies, with Commissioner of Police Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi directing officers to strengthen intelligence gathering and warning that abuse of police authority will not be tolerated.
The new directives were announced on Monday, October 26, 2026, during a meeting involving the command’s management team and area commanders. The meeting examined ways to improve security operations, enforce discipline and ensure that police personnel remain accountable for their actions.
Afolabi specifically cautioned officers against extorting members of the public and arresting individuals on behalf of other persons without proper legal justification. He said policing must be conducted within the limits of the law, adding that the command would strengthen its oversight mechanisms to address violations.
To enforce compliance, the commissioner ordered the deployment of the command’s X Squad to monitor police personnel and check unprofessional practices. He also charged senior officers with ensuring that misconduct among personnel under their supervision was promptly identified and addressed.
In a separate measure aimed at improving crime prevention, all Divisional Police Officers were instructed to maintain crime maps at their respective formations. Intelligence officers at area and divisional levels were also directed to update the records every day, providing the command with a clearer picture of criminal activities and emerging threats across Abia.
The commissioner further called for improved security at police facilities, directing that station guards be reinforced. Area commanders were equally tasked with conducting regular inspections of divisions under their control to ensure compliance with operational standards and maintain effective supervision.
Addressing officers’ conduct on digital platforms, Afolabi reminded personnel that their social media activities must comply with the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy. He stressed that officers were expected to demonstrate restraint, discipline and professionalism in both their official responsibilities and public engagements online.
The police chief said the measures were designed to strengthen public confidence in the command while improving its ability to respond to security challenges. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Abia State Police Command to protecting residents and their property through lawful policing, stronger intelligence systems and greater accountability at every level of the force.
