A community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has called on the state government to intervene in a prolonged dispute over a parcel of land allegedly taken over by individuals from a neighbouring community.
The Umuenu community of Umuawulu made the appeal through its legal representative, Hyacinth Moghalu, in a petition addressed to the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke.
The community also urged the authorities to ensure that an ongoing criminal case linked to the dispute is allowed to proceed before the High Court in Awka. The case, involving Ifeanyichukwu Nwogbo and seven others, followed allegations arising from events surrounding the disputed land.
According to the petition, the disagreement over the Agu Ofu land has persisted for several years despite previous legal proceedings and attempts at reconciliation. The community maintained that available rulings and the outcome of a mediation process favoured its claim to the property.
It further alleged that tensions escalated following an alleged invasion of the land in 2020, with another confrontation reported in June 2024. The community claimed that some of its members sustained injuries during the incident and that one of the complainants, Humphrey Obi, subsequently died.
The petitioners are seeking government action to facilitate the continuation of the legal proceedings, saying a judicial determination would help resolve the longstanding dispute and restore peace between the affected communities.
