The Cross River State Government has intensified efforts to close immunisation gaps in rural communities by using drones to transport vaccines and other essential medical supplies to areas that are difficult to access by road.
The Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Vivien Otu, said the technology had improved efforts to identify and vaccinate children who missed routine immunisation, particularly those living in riverine and isolated settlements.
Otu disclosed this in Calabar during an event organised to mark progress made under a zero-dose intensification programme implemented by Zipline in partnership with the state government and the Ministry of Health.
She explained that more than 160 teams, comprising vaccination personnel, recorders and community mobilisers, were deployed across nine local government areas to identify and reach children who had missed scheduled vaccinations. Some beneficiaries also received nutritional support and deworming services.
According to Otu, drone deliveries have helped overcome transportation difficulties associated with poor road networks and challenging terrain. Zipline’s Commercial Director, Hannatu Adegboyega, said the company had worked with the state since 2023 and delivered millions of vaccine doses, while pledging continued support for healthcare logistics, cold-chain storage and data collection.
