A community youth leader in Ebonyi State has cautioned residents and social media users against spreading unverified information concerning the recent killings in Ihetutu community, Ivo Local Government Area, warning that misleading reports could heighten tensions and undermine efforts to restore peace.
The warning comes amid public outrage over the reported deaths of two young men, identified as Chibuike Elema, 18, and Obinna Gideon Akandu, 20, allegedly shot by a soldier reportedly attached to a mining operation in the area. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
The killings have triggered grief and anger among residents, with reports of unrest and damage to property at the mining facility. Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue to establish what happened and determine responsibility.
The community leader’s appeal highlights the need for residents to rely on verified information from credible sources rather than circulate rumours, unconfirmed casualty figures or allegations that could provoke further confrontation. Community members are also being urged to exercise restraint and allow the relevant authorities to complete their inquiries.
Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Government has condemned the killings and announced measures to address the crisis, including sealing the mining facility pending efforts to restore peace. Military authorities have also confirmed that investigations are ongoing, while residents await answers and accountability for the loss of the two young men.
