The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has cautioned its personnel against violating citizens’ fundamental rights, warning that officers who engage in unlawful arrests or abuse their authority could face disciplinary action.
The directive reinforces the need for officers to carry out their duties within the limits of the law while protecting lives, property and public safety. The corps stressed that security operations must be conducted professionally, with respect for due process and the dignity of every individual.
The warning comes amid growing public concern about the conduct of law enforcement personnel and the treatment of citizens during arrests and investigations. Security officers are expected to understand the legal procedures governing detention and ensure that suspects are handled in accordance with established regulations.
The NSCDC leadership also emphasised accountability and discipline, urging personnel to avoid actions that could damage public confidence in the organisation. Officers were reminded that their responsibilities include enforcing the law without intimidation, harassment or unnecessary use of their powers.
The corps’ position highlights the importance of balancing effective security operations with the protection of civil liberties. Members of the public are expected to benefit from lawful and professional policing, while officers are being urged to uphold the standards required of a national security agency.
