The death toll from a deadly attack in Taraba State has reportedly risen to 58, with 15 people said to have drowned while attempting to escape the assailants. The incident has deepened concerns over the safety of residents in the affected communities.
The attack occurred in Binnari community, within Karim Lamido Local Government Area, where suspected armed bandits reportedly invaded the settlement, opened fire on residents and looted homes and shops. The violence forced many inhabitants to flee in different directions in search of safety.
As residents escaped, some reportedly drowned while attempting to cross a river, while others were struck by gunfire. Several homes, shops and motorcycles were also reportedly destroyed, leaving families displaced and uncertain about the fate of missing relatives.
Security agencies have deployed additional personnel to the affected area to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible. Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has condemned the killings and called for urgent measures to protect residents and restore peace.
Meanwhile, the conflicting casualty figures highlight the difficulty of establishing the full scale of the tragedy. Community accounts have put the toll as high as 58, but other reports have given lower figures, with the final number of victims yet to be independently confirmed.
