Enugu State is expanding its industrial and healthcare ambitions with the unveiling of a multi-billion-naira pharmaceutical manufacturing facility by Governor Peter Mbah. The investment is expected to boost local medicine production, generate employment and contribute to efforts to make essential drugs more accessible to Nigerians.
The new facility, operated by Anchorage Pharmaceutical Industries Limited in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, is designed to contribute to the development of Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector. Its establishment comes amid concerns about the country’s dependence on imported medicines and the need to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity.
Governor Mbah said his administration would explore opportunities to work with the company in supplying medicines to public healthcare facilities. He linked the initiative to the state’s ongoing development of 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres, which require dependable access to essential drugs and medical supplies.
Beyond healthcare, the project is expected to create jobs and provide opportunities for young people to gain practical experience in pharmaceutical production. Company officials also highlighted their commitment to product quality, regulatory compliance and the development of local expertise.
The investment adds to Enugu’s efforts to attract private-sector participation in economic development. Its broader impact will depend on sustained production, affordable pricing, effective distribution and strict quality control to ensure that safe and reliable medicines reach patients across the state and beyond.
