Federal civil servants are expected to receive additional financial support for transportation following an agreement between the Federal Government and organised labour on a N70,000 monthly allowance covering a six-month period.
The arrangement emerged from a meeting between government officials and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on October 27, 2026, where both sides discussed workers’ welfare and outstanding financial obligations.
The transport benefit is among several measures adopted to ease the financial burden on public sector employees. According to the agreement, the payment is expected to run for six months, starting in November 2026.
Beyond transportation support, the government has committed to clearing outstanding peculiar allowance arrears owed to eligible workers from May 1, 2026. The arrears will be paid in three instalments, with the first payment expected in November.
Healthcare workers are also expected to benefit from the agreement. The government pledged to settle 19 months of outstanding allowances within three months, beginning in December 2026.
On the minimum wage issue, the government and labour representatives agreed to establish a negotiation committee to address unresolved concerns surrounding its implementation. Discussions on the matter are expected to begin without further delay.
The meeting also considered salary adjustments for health workers under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure, hazard allowances for agricultural officers and possible tax concessions for workers. Some of these matters will require additional reviews by the appropriate government agencies.
Both parties also urged state and local governments to take steps towards implementing the welfare-related agreements within their respective jurisdictions.
A follow-up meeting is scheduled for one month after the discussions to assess the level of compliance and determine the progress made on the outstanding issues.
For public servants, the key issues to watch are the commencement of the transport payments in November, the schedule for settling outstanding allowances and the outcome of further negotiations on wages and other employment benefits.
