Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says preliminary information indicates that the Flydubai co-pilot accused of trying to bring down a passenger aircraft had undergone Islamist radicalisation.
The incident occurred on Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, when the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The plane was carrying more than 170 people.
The injured captain reportedly managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to intervene and restrain the co-pilot. Two off-duty pilots who were onboard then assisted in regaining control of the aircraft before it made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, was taken into custody as authorities began investigating what led to the incident. Netanyahu has described the man as suicidal, while saying investigators are still working to establish his motive and whether anyone else was involved.
The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into the incident, including whether it was connected to terrorism or involved prior planning. Officials have not established a link to Iran, and investigations involving Saudi, Emirati and Israeli authorities remain ongoing.
