Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have suffered a setback in their campaign at the WAFU B Under-17 Championship in Burkina Faso, losing 2–1 to Niger Republic. The defeat has put the Nigerian youngsters under pressure, leaving their hopes of reaching the semi-finals dependent on their performance in their final Group B fixture.
Niger took the lead through Abdoul Razaq Zada in the first half before Abdoul Rakilou extended the advantage in the 86th minute. Nigeria struggled to find a breakthrough for much of the encounter, allowing their opponents to maintain control as the match approached its conclusion.
The Golden Eaglets managed to reduce the deficit when Mubarak Fasiu scored in stoppage time. However, the late goal was not enough to prevent Nigeria from losing all three points, leaving the team with little room for error in the remaining group-stage contest.
Attention now shifts to Saturday’s crucial meeting with Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria must secure a victory to keep their semi-final hopes alive, while the Ivorians remain in contention for qualification after drawing their opening match against Niger.
The tournament serves as a qualifying competition for the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, making the upcoming encounter particularly important for Nigeria’s young footballers. The Golden Eaglets will need greater defensive discipline, improved attacking efficiency and a determined performance to avoid an early exit and keep their continental ambitions on track.
