Nigeria’s allied health professionals have warned of a possible nationwide industrial action following prolonged delays in the payment of outstanding allowances and the implementation of salary-related agreements with the Federal Government.

The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) said the unresolved disputes had worsened dissatisfaction among its members, accusing the authorities of failing to address issues affecting their earnings, career progression and working conditions.

The union’s leadership announced the position after a National Executive Council meeting held in Enugu between October 21 and 22, 2026. It called on members across the country to remain prepared for further action if the outstanding demands were not addressed.

At the centre of the dispute is the alleged non-payment of 19 months’ arrears of revised professional allowances, alongside delays in implementing adjustments to the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS). The union maintained that these matters had remained unresolved despite previous engagements with the government.

NUAHP also raised concerns over the exclusion of some categories of health professionals from call-duty allowances, even when their responsibilities require them to work beyond normal hours. The affected groups reportedly include speech therapists, audiologists, medical social workers and health information management professionals.

The union further demanded the promotion of eligible personnel who have met the requirements for advancement from CONHESS 14 to CONHESS 15. It argued that continued delays in career progression could undermine morale and affect the delivery of healthcare services.

On broader health sector concerns, the organisation urged lawmakers to reconsider proposed amendments to health sector executive legislation, insisting that allied health professionals should be adequately represented in decisions affecting the industry.

It also called for improved security in hospitals, stronger preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks and the provision of adequate protective equipment for healthcare personnel. According to the union, the safety of workers must remain a priority as health facilities continue to manage various public health challenges.

NUAHP additionally proposed measures such as transport support, hardship allowances and tax relief to reduce the economic pressure on its members.

The union’s warning signals the possibility of another confrontation between health workers and the Federal Government if negotiations fail to produce concrete results. A fresh strike could place additional pressure on hospitals and disrupt services for patients who depend on public healthcare facilities.
