The Uganda Government has said the woman who tested positive for Ebola in Nigeria showed no symptoms of the disease before leaving Uganda, raising questions about when and where she contracted the infection.
The patient, a Ugandan-born woman married to a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, reportedly returned to Nigeria in early October after spending time in Uganda. She later developed symptoms and was confirmed to have Ebola on October 19.
Health authorities are investigating her travel history and movements to establish the source of the infection. The case has also prompted concerns about the possibility of further transmission, particularly because the woman visited healthcare facilities before her diagnosis.
The Nigerian government has begun tracing people who may have had contact with the patient, including medical workers, family members and passengers who travelled on the same flights. Officials have also placed identified contacts under monitoring as part of efforts to prevent the virus from spreading.
Nigeria’s latest Ebola case comes amid an outbreak that has affected several African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya. Health authorities are working to determine whether the Nigerian and Kenyan cases could be linked to a possible exposure at Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport.
The government has assured Nigerians that measures are being taken to contain the infection, while urging the public to remain calm and follow health guidelines.
