Hong Kong has suspended the importation of poultry meat and related products from selected areas of Denmark and the United States following reports of highly pathogenic bird flu outbreaks. The restriction, which took effect immediately, is aimed at protecting public health and preventing potentially infected products from entering the market.
The affected locations are Lolland Municipality in Denmark and Jackson County in Minnesota, United States. The ban covers poultry meat and other poultry products, including eggs, according to Hong Kong’s Centre for Food Safety.
The decision followed notifications from Danish veterinary authorities and the World Organisation for Animal Health regarding outbreaks of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza in the two areas.
Official figures show that Hong Kong imported approximately 390 tonnes of frozen poultry meat from Denmark in the first six months of 2026. During the same period, imports from the United States included about 24,190 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 20.2 million poultry eggs.
Hong Kong’s food safety authorities have contacted their Danish and American counterparts and said they would continue monitoring developments. Officials are expected to review the situation as more information about the outbreaks becomes available, with further action possible depending on the progress of the disease.
