The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, has directed a review of Permanent Voter Card distribution across the South-East, amid efforts to address challenges affecting voter access and participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive is aimed at examining the distribution process and identifying gaps that could prevent eligible voters from collecting their cards. Permanent Voter Cards remain an essential requirement for voter accreditation under Nigeria’s electoral system, making their timely availability important to election preparedness.

INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan gave the directive on Tuesday during an interactive meeting with commission staff in Enugu, where he assessed preparations for the 2027 polls. He emphasised that every eligible citizen who had completed registration should be able to obtain their PVC without unnecessary administrative or logistical difficulties.

Amupitan disclosed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters had surpassed 103 million following three phases of Continuous Voter Registration conducted between August 2025 and July 2026. The exercise recorded more than 10.7 million new registrations, with the figures subjected to biometric verification to eliminate duplicate entries.

He also highlighted the introduction of online voter registration and printable PVC technology as measures designed to make the electoral process more accessible. The INEC chairman urged officials across the South-East’s 95 local government areas to strengthen coordination, resolve distribution challenges and ensure that no eligible voter is denied the opportunity to participate in the 2027 elections.
