Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone believes Ademola Lookman has the qualities to become a major attacking force for the Spanish club, following the Nigerian’s decisive contribution against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
Lookman came off the bench to find the net in Atletico’s 2-0 victory over the English Premier League side, ending a six-match goal drought and providing a timely boost to his confidence.
The 28-year-old capitalised on a rebound in the 79th minute after goalkeeper Senne Lammens failed to hold Jonathan David’s effort. His quick reaction helped Atletico secure the victory and marked his 100th senior club career goal, according to Transfermarkt.
Simeone identified Lookman’s ability to trouble defenders in individual battles and his record in front of goal as qualities that make him valuable to the team. However, the coach believes the forward has yet to consistently display the full extent of his abilities.
Before the Manchester United encounter, Lookman had managed just one goal in all competitions this season. His latest strike could provide the momentum needed to improve his numbers and strengthen his position in Atletico’s attacking options.
Atletico had taken the lead through Pablo Barrios within the opening minute. Their advantage was further protected when Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was dismissed in the 74th minute for a foul on David as the last defender.
The result extended Atletico’s winning streak to five matches, while Manchester United remained without a victory in their last five games.
Lookman will be eager to maintain his scoring momentum as Atletico continue their campaign, with Simeone expecting the Nigerian international to translate his attacking potential into more consistent performances.
