The Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on the newly elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, to focus on building a stronger basketball system that supports young talents and improves Nigeria’s performance in international competitions.
The association made the call while congratulating Abdullahi, who emerged as the federation’s president during its elective congress held in Abuja on Thursday. Abdullahi, who serves as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, will lead the body responsible for administering basketball in the country. Ugo Udezue was elected vice-president.
In a statement signed by the acting chairman of Kogi SWAN, Odimayo Fredrick, the association expressed confidence in the new president’s ability to provide effective leadership and introduce policies that would strengthen the sport. It described his election as an opportunity to address existing challenges and establish a more sustainable foundation for basketball development.
The association identified grassroots talent discovery, improved sporting facilities and better welfare for players, coaches and other stakeholders as key areas requiring attention. It also stressed the importance of strengthening domestic competitions and creating opportunities for upcoming players to develop their abilities and compete at higher levels.
Kogi SWAN further pledged its support for Abdullahi and his executive team, expressing hope that cooperation among sports administrators, government agencies, athletes and the media would contribute to the growth of Nigerian basketball. It urged the new leadership to promote accountability, inclusiveness and policies that would benefit the sport beyond the national level.
The association wished the new administration success and encouraged it to use the opportunity to expand participation, nurture emerging talents and improve Nigeria’s standing in continental and international basketball.
