More than 400 student-athletes are expected to compete in the second edition of the Pan African School Games, which kicks off on Friday at James Hope College, Lagos, with a brand-new school bus among the prizes available to participating schools.
Sponsored by Mikano Changan Motors, the bus is one of the major incentives for the three-day sporting event scheduled to end on October 18, 2026.
The competition will feature athletics, swimming and football, with students competing across the under-11, under-13 and under-15 categories. Athletics and swimming will each have 30 events, providing young competitors with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities across different disciplines.
The event, previously known as the Africa School Games, has adopted a new identity to reflect its broader ambition of connecting young people across the continent through sports, education and cultural interaction.
Its inaugural edition, hosted by British International School in Lagos, attracted 11 schools and more than 300 student-athletes. The organisers are now building on that foundation to expand participation and improve the overall experience for competitors.
Beyond winning medals and trophies, the initiative seeks to connect outstanding young athletes with opportunities for further education and professional sporting development.
Through partnerships with organisations such as Plumptre Advisory, participants can potentially access opportunities at international educational institutions, including schools in the United States and the United Kingdom.
The organisers have also strengthened arrangements for transportation, medical care, athlete protection and competition management, drawing lessons from the previous edition.
Corporate organisations, including Zenith Bank, Prime Atlantic, UAC Foods, Nigerian Exchange and Flutterwave, alongside the Lagos State Government and its Sports Commission, are supporting the initiative.
As part of its expansion plans, the competition is expected to welcome schools from Kenya and Ghana in 2027, marking another step towards establishing a continental platform for young African sporting talents.
