Manchester United have disciplined Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez following his public remarks questioning the club’s recruitment decisions and leadership, bringing an end to an internal dispute that emerged after their recent European defeat.
The 28-year-old centre-back reportedly incurred the club’s displeasure after Manchester United suffered a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Martinez expressed dissatisfaction with the club’s summer transfer business, arguing that the squad needed additional quality to compete at the highest level.
His comments also placed the spotlight on football director Jason Wilcox, whom he accused of falling short of expectations in strengthening the team. Martinez further defended head coach Michael Carrick, suggesting that responsibility for the club’s difficulties should not rest solely on the manager and players.
Following the controversy, Martinez met with Carrick, Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and other senior officials at the club’s Carrington training complex. The discussions reportedly provided an opportunity for both sides to address the disagreement and clarify their positions.
The defender subsequently issued an apology on social media, acknowledging that his frustration following the defeat had influenced his decision to speak publicly. He admitted that the timing and manner of his comments were inappropriate and stressed the importance of unity in pursuing the club’s ambitions.
Manchester United have reportedly imposed a fine as disciplinary action, although the precise amount has not been disclosed. The club considers the matter resolved, allowing attention to return to preparations for upcoming fixtures.
Despite the resolution, Martinez’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain. His current contract runs until the end of the 2026–2027 season, with Manchester United retaining an option to extend it by another year.
