The financial burden of safeguarding Nigeria’s petroleum industry has climbed sharply, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited reporting N11.2tn in outstanding claims from the Federation.
The amount covers energy security-related expenses and advances incurred by NNPC in efforts to keep crude production and evacuation operations running despite security challenges in oil-producing areas.
NNPC’s financial records show that the figure was considerably higher than the N7.13tn reported in the preceding year, indicating a rise of about N4.07tn.
A substantial portion of the outstanding amount, about N8.67tn, was identified as energy security cost receivables as of the end of 2025.
The company, however, recorded an increase in petroleum output during the year, with crude oil and condensate production reaching an average of 1.77 million barrels daily.
NNPC also ended the year with N7.2tn profit after tax, as improved production and operational performance contributed to stronger financial results.
