The Delta State Government has introduced a fresh economic empowerment initiative aimed at helping 15,000 residents improve their livelihoods through financial support for small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures.
The programme, valued at approximately ₦4bn, is designed to provide beneficiaries with funds to expand existing enterprises or establish new businesses. Each approved applicant is expected to receive ₦250,000 under the scheme.
The initiative was announced following a State Executive Council meeting in Asaba, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori presided over discussions on economic development and other government priorities. Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed details of the plan while briefing journalists after the meeting.
The state government intends to implement the intervention through the Delta State Social Investment Programme, with attention directed towards residents facing economic difficulties. Small-scale traders and individuals seeking capital to become self-employed are among those expected to benefit.
Officials say the scheme forms part of broader efforts to improve household income, encourage private enterprise and create opportunities for residents who lack access to affordable business financing. The government is expected to provide further information on application procedures and the selection of beneficiaries.
In addition to the business support programme, the Executive Council considered measures to strengthen agricultural investment in the state. It approved compensation for land acquired for agricultural activities in the central senatorial district, a move intended to encourage commercial farming and support food production.
The council also approved fiscal planning documents that will guide the preparation of Delta’s 2027 budget. These documents are expected to help the government determine its revenue outlook and spending priorities for the next financial year.
Meanwhile, the state government is considering expanding free medical outreach services to additional riverine communities after an earlier exercise received a positive response in areas affected by oil spillage.
The council further approved plans for a clubhouse at the State Secretariat in Asaba to provide civil servants with a recreational facility.
With thousands of residents expected to benefit from the proposed grants, the programme represents one of the state’s latest efforts to support grassroots businesses and stimulate economic activity. Its impact will depend largely on transparent beneficiary selection, timely disbursement and the ability of recipients to turn the assistance into sustainable sources of income.
