Twenty National Youth Service Corps Members have regained their freedom after spending seven days in the custody of kidnappers in Imo State.
The victims were abducted on October 1 while travelling from Oyo State to their NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. They were attacked along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in the Umunoha area of Imo State.
A joint operation involving the police and other security agencies led to their rescue at Amakohia Ubi Village on Wednesday. Following their recovery, the victims were taken for medical assessment and necessary treatment.
The police confirmed that no arrests had been made in connection with the abduction as of Wednesday night. Security operatives, however, said efforts had been intensified to locate and apprehend those behind the incident.
The rescue followed days of coordinated search operations by security agencies, who had earlier traced the suspected kidnappers’ hideout. Authorities have pledged to continue the operation until those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
