Tensions have emerged between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress over the Rainbow Coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike has been promoting the coalition in Rivers State as a platform supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election while allowing members of the Peoples Democratic Party and other political groups to pursue candidates in other electoral contests.
However, the APC Progressive Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, said its members would not support any political arrangement capable of weakening the party or affecting the interests of APC candidates.
Uzodimma stated that the governors’ campaign commitment remained focused on APC candidates at all levels and that the forum had not entered into any formal agreement with individuals or opposition parties.
Wike, through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, maintained that the Rainbow Coalition was not an APC platform. He said his support for Tinubu did not prevent the PDP from fielding candidates for governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.
The disagreement comes amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly over the relationship between support for Tinubu at the presidential level and contests for other elective positions.
