A fatal highway collision involving a Tesla equipped with driver-assistance technology has claimed the life of a 71-year-old man in California, United States.

The deceased, identified as Domingo Gonzales of Vallejo, was struck by the electric vehicle in the early hours of Thursday along Interstate 80 near the Interstate 780 interchange in Solano County.

Investigators said the Tesla was travelling at about 70 miles per hour when Gonzales entered the highway from the roadside and attempted to cross towards the median. The vehicle’s driver was reportedly using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature at the time of the incident.

Available dashboard-camera footage reportedly captured the vehicle braking and attempting to manoeuvre away from the pedestrian. However, the efforts failed to prevent the collision, and Gonzales was struck by the car.

The situation became more serious when other vehicles reportedly ran over the victim after the initial impact. The motorists involved in those subsequent collisions allegedly left the scene, prompting authorities to seek information that could help identify them.

The Tesla driver, a 26-year-old San Francisco resident, stopped following the crash and cooperated with the investigating officers. Authorities have continued examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine whether any offence was committed.

The case has also drawn attention to the limitations of automated driving technology. Despite the name Full Self-Driving, Tesla’s system requires drivers to remain attentive and ready to intervene whenever necessary.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicles that left the scene to contact the appropriate authorities.
