A fatal road accident in Kumo, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, has claimed seven lives and left 11 people injured after a trailer collided with several vehicles and motorcycles.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Tashan Magariya Junction along the Gombe-Billiri Road, involving a DAF trailer, two Volkswagen Golf cars and five motorcycles.

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicated that the trailer suffered a suspected brake failure while travelling from Gombe towards Yola. The driver reportedly lost control, causing the heavy-duty vehicle to crash into the other road users.

According to the FRSC incident report, 25 people were involved in the accident. The seven fatalities comprised four adult men, two boys and a girl, while the 11 injured victims included four adult men, three adult women and four girls.

The injured victims reportedly sustained various injuries, including serious fractures, cuts and bruises. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Kumo for medical attention, while emergency responders also provided first aid to victims at the scene.

The road safety agency said its rescue team arrived at the location two minutes after receiving a distress call at 5:32 p.m. The wrecked vehicles were subsequently handed over to the police’s Motor Traffic Division in Kumo for further investigation.

The identities of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting, while details concerning the condition of the remaining seven people involved in the crash were not immediately available.

The incident has once again raised concerns about vehicle maintenance and road safety, particularly the dangers posed by mechanical faults in heavy-duty trucks operating on major highways.
