First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has awarded ₦20 million in educational support to Maryam Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, a Gombe-based student who recently emerged victorious at an international Qur’anic competition in Saudi Arabia.
Maryam received the financial support during a visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, where Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya led a delegation to introduce her to the First Lady.
The young scholar won the second category of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’an Recitation Competition held in Makkah, recording 97.70 marks in the category involving Qur’an memorisation, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation.
Her victory was particularly notable as the 2026 edition marked the first time female contestants were admitted into the long-running international competition. She reportedly received about ₦120 million as the competition’s prize.
Maryam, who studies Physics Education at Gombe State University, had previously won the female category of the 40th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Maiduguri.
Tinubu described the achievement as a source of pride for Nigeria and the girl-child, while Governor Yahaya expressed appreciation for the First Lady’s support towards Maryam’s education.
