More than 40,000 farmers affiliated with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria in Abia State have declared support for the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Dr Kelechi Anosike, ahead of the February 2027 election.
The association said its decision followed a review of Anosike’s proposed plans for agriculture and rural development. Among the proposals highlighted are improved agricultural extension services, farm mechanisation, grants, revitalisation of farm settlements and a programme tagged Operation Feed Abia.
AFAN said it intends to mobilise its members across the state’s 17 local government areas to participate peacefully in the election and engage with the campaign on issues affecting farmers and the agricultural value chain.
On its part, the PDP campaign council said farmers would be treated as partners in governance. The party’s state chairman and deputy governorship candidate, Amah Abraham, said a future PDP administration would include a farmer as Commissioner for Agriculture, while a proposed Directorate of Farmers would also involve representatives from across the state.
Anosike said agriculture would form a major part of his proposed administration, promising measures aimed at increasing food production, supporting farmers, improving rural roads and creating opportunities in areas including poultry, fishery, piggery and ranching. These are campaign proposals made by the candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
