Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.
Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has urged Nigerians to embrace the responsibilities of citizenship, participate actively in democracy and remain vigilant in protecting the nation’s freedom and unity.
In his 2026 Independence Day broadcast titled “Citizenship, Freedom and Vigilance,” delivered on Thursday, October 1, Governor Otti acknowledged Nigeria’s achievements since independence but noted that challenges such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, inadequate infrastructure and limited access to quality healthcare and education remain major concerns.
He urged Nigerians to contribute to national development through responsible voting, payment of taxes, obedience to laws, hard work and the rejection of corruption, nepotism and other practices that undermine progress.
The Governor also commended security personnel, teachers, healthcare workers, civil servants, farmers, entrepreneurs and other Nigerians contributing to nation-building. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the socioeconomic transformation of Abia State, assuring residents that their security and welfare would remain a priority.
Also speaking, Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, urged residents to continue supporting the police and cooperating with security agencies to maintain peace and protect lives and property. He emphasised the importance of unity and collaboration among police personnel, noting that their shared identity and commitment to duty were essential to effective policing.
Meanwhile, some Nigerians reflecting on the country’s 66 years of independence expressed the view that Nigeria was better in the past than it is today, citing challenges such as rising living costs, unemployment and insecurity.
The celebration provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s achievements and challenges while renewing calls for unity, responsible citizenship and national development.
Governor Otti concluded by urging Nigerians not to take their freedom for granted, stressing that protecting the country’s democracy, unity and sovereignty requires collective vigilance and commitment.
