A commercial driver has been killed after suspected gunmen opened fire on his vehicle along the Anyiin-Ayilamo road in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The victim, identified as Igba Agenewe, reportedly died at the scene of the attack.
Agenewe, who operated from Wurukum Park in Makurdi, was said to be returning from Anyiin when the attackers emerged from the surrounding bush and shot at the vehicle. The incident has left members of the transport community and the victim’s colleagues mourning.
Three passengers travelling with the driver were reportedly military personnel and were taken away by the attackers during the incident. They were later said to have regained their freedom and returned to Anyiin.
The attack has renewed concerns over security along the route, particularly around the Ayilamo axis, where motorists have faced growing risks. Transport operators say the situation is creating fear among drivers and commuters who depend on the road for movement.
The driver’s killing has also triggered fresh calls for stronger security measures in the area. Transport stakeholders are urging security agencies to increase patrols, protect road users and pursue those responsible for the attack.
