Recovery teams have intensified efforts to retrieve wreckage from the Nigerian Air Force aircraft that crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as specialist divers continue searching underwater for materials needed to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The Nigerian Air Force disclosed that additional components had been recovered from the crash site, with personnel working alongside divers from the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau. The operation is focused on locating and preserving aircraft materials that could assist investigators in their ongoing work.
The difficult terrain has necessitated the use of specialised techniques, including underwater surveys, satellite-based search imagery and excavation of mud. Teams are also pumping out excess water to gain access to areas believed to contain relevant parts of the aircraft.
The aircraft, an ATR 42-500 with registration number NAF 931, crashed in Igbokoda, within Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on October 5, 2026. The aircraft was carrying 25 people, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers, according to reports on the incident.
The Air Force said the recovery operation was continuing around the clock, with all retrieved components to be documented and preserved for investigative purposes. The exercise involves cooperation among military personnel and technical specialists, while efforts continue to recover further wreckage and gather evidence that could help clarify the circumstances of the crash.
