The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State has challenged the exclusion of its governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from the list of contenders for the 2027 election, warning that it may seek judicial intervention if the matter is not resolved. The party says it has formally lodged a complaint with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is awaiting a response.
The state chairman of the NDC, Husseini Mairiga, disclosed that the complaint was forwarded through the party’s national leadership following INEC’s invitation to affected parties to report concerns over omitted candidates. The commission has set October 24 as the deadline for submitting such complaints.
Mairiga maintained that Gwarzo fulfilled the party’s membership registration requirements and expressed confidence that a review of the relevant records would support the candidate’s eligibility. He urged INEC to examine the party’s register and clarify the circumstances surrounding the omission before reaching a final decision.
The controversy comes amid wider disagreements over the eligibility of political parties to field candidates in the forthcoming elections. INEC has cited a Supreme Court ruling affirming statutory requirements concerning the submission of party membership registers, stressing that compliance is necessary for valid candidate nomination.
The Kano NDC leadership has appealed for calm among its supporters while awaiting the commission’s decision. However, the party warned that it would approach the courts if Gwarzo’s name is not restored, setting the stage for a possible legal dispute over the party’s participation in the 2027 governorship contest.
