Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has announced plans to impose strict disciplinary measures on staff members found guilty of extortion, unauthorised sales of academic materials and other violations of the institution’s regulations.
The warning was conveyed in an internal memorandum dated October 12, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar, Dr Joy Nwankwo. The circular, addressed to both teaching and non-teaching staff, followed concerns raised by the university’s Governing Council over alleged breaches of established workplace rules.
Among the practices highlighted were demands for money from students and colleagues for routine official services, the direct sale of textbooks and other learning materials to students, persistent lateness and absence from work without approval. The university also expressed concern over employees who allegedly failed to return to their duties after approved study, sabbatical or annual leave while continuing to receive salaries.
The memorandum further raised concerns about staff members who reportedly delegated their official responsibilities to casual workers while remaining away from their duty posts. It also cautioned against the use of course representatives to exploit students financially and the failure of relevant personnel to upload examination results in accordance with the institution’s academic regulations.
In another directive, the university prohibited the use of students to invigilate examinations, stressing the need for compliance with its academic standards, ethical guidelines and staff code of conduct. The council also expressed concern over comments about the university’s Visitor, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and its management that it considered detrimental to the institution’s interests.
The Governing Council, according to the memo, expressed displeasure over the reported infractions and resolved to take decisive action against employees found culpable. It warned that any staff member established to have violated the regulations would face serious disciplinary consequences.
The directive reinforces the university’s position that staff members must adhere to professional standards, discharge their responsibilities diligently and respect the rules governing their employment.
