Atiku Abubakar,Former Vice President has questioned President Bola Tinubu’s readiness to seek another term in office, insisting that the President must account for his stewardship before asking Nigerians to renew his mandate.
Atiku’s criticism comes amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the opposition raising concerns about the effects of government policies on the daily lives of Nigerians.
In a statement conveyed by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku challenged the President to address the consequences of his administration’s decisions, particularly in areas affecting household finances and access to basic necessities.
He maintained that the hardship experienced by many Nigerians should form a central part of any assessment of the current government. According to him, the President must be prepared to explain what his policies have delivered and how they have improved the living conditions of citizens.
The former vice president also questioned the reliance on political associates to handle campaign engagements on behalf of the President, arguing that the responsibility of seeking another mandate requires direct accountability to voters.
Atiku’s comments are likely to intensify the political exchanges surrounding Tinubu’s second-term ambition as opposition figures seek to make the administration’s record a major issue in the next election. The debate is expected to focus on economic management, public welfare and whether the government has met the expectations of Nigerians since assuming office in May 2023.
