Anambra State is seeking N70 billion from the Federal Government to confront environmental and security threats affecting communities and infrastructure across the state.

The request comes amid concerns over the destructive impact of erosion, which has continued to threaten homes, roads and other public facilities in several locations. The state is seeking federal assistance to strengthen its response to the problem and prevent further damage to affected areas.

Gully erosion has remained a major concern in Anambra, with some communities facing significant land loss and the destruction of properties. Controlling the menace often requires expensive engineering projects, drainage improvements and long-term environmental management measures.

Beyond the environmental challenge, insecurity has also placed pressure on the state’s administration, prompting calls for additional resources to improve the protection of lives and property.

The proposed funding is expected to support interventions addressing the two challenges, although the specific allocation of the requested N70 billion between erosion control and security measures would depend on the government’s plans and any eventual federal approval.

The appeal also underscores the financial burden facing state governments as they seek to address emergencies, protect vulnerable communities and maintain essential infrastructure.

Federal assistance, if granted, could strengthen ongoing efforts to reduce erosion-related damage and improve security. However, the impact of the intervention will depend on the timely release of funds, proper project execution and effective monitoring.
