Argentine forward Julián Álvarez has apologised to Atlético Madrid supporters for comments he made during the summer that fuelled speculation about his departure from the Spanish club. The striker admitted that his words and the timing of his remarks were a mistake.
Álvarez was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona during the transfer window and had indicated that leaving Atlético might be the best option. However, the Madrid club refused to accept the proposed move, leaving the forward to continue his career with the team despite growing frustration among some supporters.
The situation reportedly affected his relationship with sections of the fan base, with the 26-year-old receiving boos and jeers during the early part of the season. He acknowledged that he understood the fans’ disappointment and said he would have reacted similarly if he were in their position.
Tensions have gradually eased following a recent improvement in his performances. Álvarez scored against Stuttgart in the Champions League before helping Atlético secure a 1–0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña in their Spanish league encounter on Saturday, October 24.
The former Manchester City player expressed gratitude to his teammates and supporters for standing by him during the difficult period. He also said he was beginning to feel better physically and on the pitch, as he works to regain his best form and rebuild his relationship with Atlético’s loyal fan base.
