The global hunger crisis remained severe in 2025, with approximately 266 million people experiencing acute food insecurity across 47 countries and territories, according to figures from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The organisation attributed the worsening situation largely to armed conflicts, extreme weather conditions and disruptions to supply routes, which continue to make food inaccessible to millions of vulnerable people.

The warning coincided with the assumption of office by the WFP’s new Executive Director, Luke J. Lindberg, who called for stronger international cooperation to prevent more people from slipping into hunger.

Lindberg urged governments, private businesses, institutions and individuals to provide the financial and logistical support needed to sustain humanitarian operations and deliver food to communities facing severe shortages.

He stressed that conflicts remain a major factor behind the hunger crisis, while extreme weather events and disruptions along critical maritime routes further complicate efforts to get food to affected populations.

The WFP currently operates in 83 countries, providing emergency food assistance and supporting communities affected by conflict, disasters and other humanitarian emergencies.

Lindberg succeeds Cindy McCain, who served as executive director from April 2023 to May 2026. Carl Skau subsequently served as acting executive director before the appointment of the new head.

Before joining the WFP, Lindberg held the position of Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the United States Department of Agriculture. He also previously worked with the Export-Import Bank of the United States, where he served as chief of staff and chief strategy officer.

The latest figures underscore the urgent need for sustained humanitarian intervention as millions continue to struggle to access sufficient food, with conflict and environmental challenges placing additional pressure on already vulnerable communities.
