A fresh attempt to resolve leadership disagreements within Lagos State’s commercial tricycle transport sector is underway, following the introduction of a six-month transition arrangement by the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria (TOAN).
The association has named Abdul-Azeez Abiola to oversee its Lagos chapter as caretaker chairman, with the responsibility of bringing aggrieved members together and laying the groundwork for an election to produce permanent executives.
Augustine Agbo-Akpe, TOAN’s national president, disclosed the development on Monday during a meeting at the Lagos secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
He said the temporary leadership structure was intended to create an atmosphere for reconciliation and organisational reform. According to him, the exercise would allow the association to address internal differences and establish a more effective administrative system.
Agbo-Akpe urged tricycle operators to cooperate with the caretaker leadership, warning against actions that could worsen existing disagreements or interfere with transportation activities across the state.
Abiola, speaking after his appointment, said his priority would be to encourage cooperation among members and reduce tensions within the association. He explained that the assignment was not intended to displace existing officials but to facilitate discussions and ensure a smooth transition.
He called on members to resolve their differences through constructive engagement, adding that peaceful cooperation would be necessary to achieve lasting progress within the union.
The leadership initiative comes against the backdrop of disagreements in the tricycle transport sector, including tensions involving TOAN and the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN).
The six-month programme is expected to provide an opportunity for reconciliation and preparations for an election that will determine the substantive leadership of TOAN in Lagos State.
