Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced plans to recognise outstanding academics with roots in the state, as he highlighted the importance of celebrating individuals whose achievements have contributed to education and professional development.
The governor made the announcement at the combined convocation ceremony of Rhema University, Aba, where he spoke about the need to preserve the legacies of accomplished scholars and encourage younger generations to pursue excellence.
Among those expected to receive recognition are Professor Benson Oluikpe, who is approaching his 90th birthday, and an Abia-born professor of biomedical sciences based in the United States. Otti also disclosed that arrangements were being considered to celebrate the 80th birthday of Rhema University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogbonnaya Onwudike, next year.
The event provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of private individuals to the growth of education in Abia. The governor commended the university’s Chancellor, Bro Emma Okorie, for establishing the institution and supporting the development of higher education in the state.
Otti also encouraged the graduating students to approach the next phase of their lives with discipline, honesty and a determination to make a difference. He urged them to apply their knowledge in ways that would benefit their communities and reflect positively on their alma mater.
In his address, Okorie said the institution remained committed to raising graduates who combine professional competence with strong moral principles. He also praised Professor Nnenna Oti for her conduct during the 2023 Abia governorship election, describing her commitment to integrity as worthy of recognition.
The Pro-Chancellor, Professor Ogwo E. Ogwo, expressed satisfaction with the university’s progress and urged the graduates to uphold the standards expected of them. He described the production of the institution’s first set of medical doctors as a significant achievement in its academic journey.
Onwudike, while reflecting on the university’s growth, described the convocation as an important occasion for the graduates, their families and the institution. The ceremony also featured the conferment of honorary doctorate degrees on Sister Chinyere Emma Okorie and Professor Nnenna Oti.
