A security scare unfolded outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, after an attacker armed with knives assaulted a police officer assigned to protect the diplomatic facility. The assailant was shot dead by the officer in what authorities described as an act of self-defence.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the incident occurred shortly after midnight on Wednesday, October 28. According to the minister, the attacker used two knives during the assault, leaving the officer with minor injuries.
Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack. Dacic also alleged that the suspect had links to the Islamic State group, citing information reportedly gathered by security agencies. The attacker’s identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of the announcement.
Following the incident, Serbia raised its terrorism threat level to the highest category and ordered increased security around sensitive facilities and locations where large numbers of people gather. Police presence has also been strengthened as investigations continue.
The attack has renewed security concerns around diplomatic missions in the Serbian capital. Officials are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident, including the suspect’s identity, background and possible motive.
