Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.
Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.
Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians to look beyond the shortcomings of elected governments and recognise the importance of preserving a political system that allows citizens to hold their leaders accountable.
He spoke at an event in Yola, Adamawa State, organised to celebrate the 59th birthday of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
Osinbajo stressed that the ability of citizens to criticise public officials, express opposing opinions and demand explanations for government decisions distinguishes democratic governance from military rule. He maintained that such freedoms should not be taken for granted.
The former vice-president also drew attention to the responsibility of the judiciary in sustaining public confidence in the country’s institutions. He said the protection of citizens’ rights must remain a priority if democracy is to deliver meaningful benefits.
Addressing economic concerns, Osinbajo called for government programmes that respond to the needs of ordinary people. He pointed to social protection measures as an important means of reducing hardship and ensuring that public resources improve living conditions.
He cited the ₦500bn social intervention allocation under the administration he served, which supported programmes such as free school meals and financial assistance for small businesses.
The former vice-president used the occasion to acknowledge Fintiri’s work in Adamawa, particularly in infrastructure development and peacebuilding. He also spoke positively about efforts to strengthen traditional leadership structures through the establishment of additional chiefdoms.
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas joined other dignitaries in celebrating Fintiri, praising the development taking place in Yola. Among the other attendees were Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
