Thirty women in Ogun State have received free breast lump removal surgeries through a healthcare intervention sponsored by the Uplift Development Foundation, established by Olufunsho Amosun, wife of former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
The medical procedures were carried out in Abeokuta as part of efforts to ensure that women who require surgical treatment are not prevented from accessing healthcare because of financial difficulties.
Speaking during the programme on Tuesday, Amosun explained that the initiative was introduced after the foundation discovered that several women identified with breast lumps during screening exercises could not afford the cost of further medical examinations and treatment.
She said the foundation began its cancer awareness, advocacy and screening campaign in 2012 before introducing financial assistance for patients requiring surgery in 2017.
During the latest screening exercise, 655 people were examined, with medical personnel identifying 81 cases of cervical-related health concerns and 53 breast-related conditions. Further assessments showed that 50 women had breast lumps, while 30 required surgical intervention.
Amosun commended the doctors and other healthcare workers who participated in the exercise, emphasising that detecting possible health problems early must be accompanied by access to appropriate treatment.
A paediatric oncologist at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Dr Morufat Ogundeyi, expressed concern over the number of breast lumps recorded during the exercise. She noted that previous screening programmes had generally resulted in about 15 lumpectomy procedures.
Ogundeyi urged Nigerians to prioritise routine medical examinations, warning that delaying medical attention could worsen health conditions. She stressed that early diagnosis helps patients receive appropriate care promptly.
One of the beneficiaries, Aminat Adebesin, expressed gratitude to the foundation, explaining that the financial support had enabled her to undergo surgery without the burden of raising money for the procedure.
