A fresh dispute has emerged in Abia State between the All Progressives Congress and Senator Nkechi Nwaogu over her political membership ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Abia APC says Nwaogu remains a registered member of the party, citing her participation in its senatorial primary in May 2026 and the continued presence of her details in the party’s membership records. The party has therefore questioned her current affiliation with the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
Nwaogu, however, has rejected the APC’s position, maintaining that she resigned from the party and subsequently joined the NDC. She is currently the NDC’s candidate for the Abia Central Senatorial District in the 2027 election.
The disagreement follows a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning political party membership registers and eligibility to participate in party primaries. The ruling has prompted fresh debate over the status of politicians who contest a primary under one party before moving to another.
With both sides maintaining different positions on Nwaogu’s membership, the controversy could have implications for the political contest surrounding the Abia Central senatorial seat as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
