The House of Representatives has called for immediate Federal Government intervention following severe flooding and erosion across parts of Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State. Communities including Ugwueke, Amaokai, Amaeze and Ezeukwu have recorded damage to homes, farmlands, roads and other infrastructure.
The lawmakers said the environmental crisis has grown beyond the ability of affected communities to handle on their own, with flooding disrupting livelihoods and access routes. Two people were also reported dead in Ndi Uzor, while residents in some areas were displaced by the rising floodwaters.
The House adopted a motion sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, and expressed sympathy to families who lost loved ones. It also called for immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, clean water, medical supplies and temporary shelter for affected residents.
Agencies including NEMA, the South East Development Commission and the Niger Delta Development Commission were urged to respond to the emergency, while the Ecological Fund Office and relevant environmental authorities were asked to assess the erosion and flooding situation in the affected communities.
The lawmakers further called for long-term measures such as improved drainage, gully stabilisation, watershed management and rehabilitation of damaged roads. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture was also asked to assess farmers’ losses and consider support to help affected communities recover their livelihoods.
