Journalist, lawyer and human rights activist Richard Akinnola has raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s judiciary, arguing that public confidence in the institution has been affected by perceptions of political influence.

Akinnola made the remarks in Benin City after participating in a book-related event organised by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation, HOMEF, where discussions focused on human rights and environmental protection.

Comparing the present democratic era with Nigeria’s military period, the activist said he believed the judiciary appeared more independent and fearless during the military era. He acknowledged, however, that several judges currently serving on the bench remain independent and committed to their duties.

Akinnola said concerns arise when sensitive cases appear to be concentrated among a small number of judges, arguing that such patterns can create public suspicion about the impartiality of judicial proceedings. He stressed that even decisions reached according to law can be viewed differently when confidence in the institution is weak.

He called on the judiciary to strengthen its independence and rebuild public trust, saying confidence in the justice system is essential to the credibility of judicial decisions and the wider democratic process.
