Every second brings Nigerians closer to exercising their democratic right and shaping the future of our nation.
Exercise your democratic right responsibly, peacefully and lawfully.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasised the need for the National Assembly to remain responsive to the challenges and expectations of Nigerians.
He spoke during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Arusha, Tanzania, where he said parliament must continue to serve as a platform through which ordinary citizens can have their interests represented in governance.
Akpabio noted that the effectiveness of democracy should extend beyond the conduct of elections, arguing that citizens should be able to see tangible improvements in their daily lives as a result of government policies.
He said lawmakers have a duty to use legislation, representation, budgetary powers and oversight to address issues affecting the people and hold public institutions accountable.
The Senate President also stressed the importance of ensuring that Nigeria’s diversity does not become a source of division, but is instead used to promote unity, inclusion and national development.
He further pointed to measures in education, taxation and regional development as areas where legislative and government efforts are being directed towards improving opportunities for Nigerians.
