The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, is facing a legal challenge at the Federal High Court in Abuja over an alleged failure to officially declare the outcome of its primary election for the Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency of Anambra State.

The case was instituted by lawyer Obunike Calistus Ohaegbu, who claims he took part in the party’s primary election conducted in May 2026 and emerged with the highest number of valid votes. He is asking the court to compel the NDC to formally announce the result.

Ohaegbu alleges that the party did not declare the result at the venue and later proceeded to recognise Ebere Onunkwo as its candidate for the constituency. He is challenging that decision and seeking a declaration that he should be recognised as the party’s nominee.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is also listed as a defendant in the suit. Among the reliefs being sought is an order restraining the commission from recognising or accepting another candidate from the NDC for the constituency while the dispute remains before the court.

The matter was not heard at the initial sitting because some defendants had reportedly not been properly served with the necessary court documents. Justice Mohammed Garba Umar subsequently adjourned proceedings until October 14, directing that all parties be duly served before the next hearing.
