Argentina will not be able to permanently remove the No. 10 shirt from its national team squad following restrictions imposed by FIFA.
The jersey, which has become synonymous with Lionel Messi’s remarkable international career, was expected to be taken out of circulation as a tribute to the Argentina captain.
FIFA regulations, however, require teams competing in its tournaments to maintain their squad numbers, making it impossible for Argentina to permanently reserve the shirt for Messi.
The decision means another Argentine player could eventually inherit the number once Messi’s international career comes to an end.
Messi’s No. 10 has carried particular significance in Argentine football, having previously been worn by the late Diego Maradona.
