The Bauchi State House of Assembly has urged the state government to increase the number of centres dedicated to handling sexual assault cases.

The lawmakers said survivors should not have to travel long distances before accessing treatment and other essential services following an assault.

They noted that expanding the facilities would improve access to healthcare, psychological support, counselling and other interventions for victims across the state.

The Assembly also emphasised the importance of ensuring that the centres have qualified personnel and adequate resources to respond effectively to reported cases.

The call forms part of efforts by the lawmakers to strengthen the state’s support system for victims and improve the handling of sexual and gender-based violence cases.
