Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has called for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be staged every two years, arguing that a longer gap between tournaments could limit opportunities for African teams to grow and compete internationally.
Chelle believes regular editions of the competition would give national teams more chances to test their strength, improve their performances and gain valuable experience against some of the continent’s best sides.
The coach also sees AFCON as an important platform for preparing African countries for the FIFA World Cup. In his view, playing in major continental tournaments more frequently would help teams build consistency and strengthen their competitiveness on the global stage.
Beyond football, Chelle highlighted the potential economic gains associated with hosting the competition. He pointed to opportunities for host nations to attract visitors, stimulate commercial activities and generate income through tourism and related businesses.
His position comes amid discussions over CAF’s decision to move AFCON from its traditional two-year format to a four-year cycle. The debate has gained renewed attention following indications from CAF president Patrice Motsepe that the proposed arrangement could be reviewed.
